WHA79 - FDI statement on Item 12.9 Draft updated global action plan on antimicrobial resistance
Provisional agenda item 12.9 Draft updated global action plan on antimicrobial resistance
(Documents A79/5 & A79/5 Add.2 )
Dentists prescribe approximately 10% of all antibiotics consumed by humans. Evidence shows that most of these prescriptions are unnecessary and could be reduced through effective oral disease prevention, management and timely access to care. In this context, we welcome the recognition of quality oral healthcare under Strategic Objective 3 of the updated Global Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance 2026‒2036 and urge Member States to ensure adequate funding for the implementation of national AMR action plans.
FDI’s Preventing AMR and Infections Task Team supports dental teams in strengthening understanding of AMR through targeted capacity building, communication, and advocacy initiatives. National Dental Associations (NDAs) can help advance all six strategic objectives of the action plan. Therefore, we urge Member States to engage NDAs as they develop or align their national AMR plans with the Global Action Plan.
