Human Papillomavirus (HPV): Integrating oral health for prevention

HPV remains one of the most widespread viral infections worldwide and a leading cause of cervical cancer, the fourth most common cancer among women and the fourth-leading cause of cancer-related deaths. However, HPV’s impact extends well beyond cervical cancer. The virus contributes to oral cancers, warts, and other lesions in the mouth. This makes the integration of HPV prevention into oral health essential. Dental professionals are increasingly recognized as key contributors to awareness-raising, early detection, and addressing long-standing fragmentation between HPV prevention and oral healthcare services.

Project HPV

Strengthening HPV prevention through oral health professionals

The overall project goal is to strengthen global HPV prevention through the structured integration of oral health professionals (OHPs) into national HPV policy, awareness, and referral pathways.

This project will generate momentum for policy alignment, build OHP capacity through evidence-based education, and elevate the role of oral health within national immunization and cancer prevention strategies. It will be anchored in the results of FDI’s multi-country survey, which assesses national HPV prevention policies, routine vaccination provision, and the extent to which HPV prevention is integrated into oral health and primary care frameworks. By directly responding to these survey findings, the project will address the needs identified and support targeted, evidence-informed resources and action.

Goal 1

Drive advocacy efforts to strengthen the role of oral health professionals in HPV prevention.

Goal 2

Develop policy recommendations to integrate HPV prevention into oral health services.
