WHA79 - FDI statement on Item 12.1 Prevention and control of non-communicable diseases
Provisional agenda item 12.1 Follow-up to the political declaration of the high-level meeting of the General Assembly on the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases
(Documents A79/5 & A79/INF./6)
FDI World Dental Federation commends the launch of the WHO Global Coalition on Oral Health on the margins of WHA79 as a platform to advance oral health commitments in the Political Declaration of the fourth High-Level Meeting on NCDs and uphold the Bangkok Declaration.
While noting WHO’s guideline on environmentally friendly, minimally invasive caries care, FDI urges governments to prioritize:
- strengthening prevention of caries and other oral diseases; and
- maintaining access to affordable, appropriate dental care while mercury free restorative materials continue to evolve.
FCTC/COP11 underscored the importance of international cooperation and the role of NGOs in advancing treaty implementation. FDI has delivered tobacco cessation workshops through national dental associations in 19 countries, reaching approximately 1,300 participants. We strongly support multisectoral approaches involving dentists and dental teams to help achieve global tobacco control targets.
