Abstract :

Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is associated with the use of antiresorptive agents like bisphosphonates and denosumab for treating osteoporosis and some cancers. With the increasing number of patients taking these antiresorptive agents, the incidence of MRONJ has also increased. Risk factors of MRONJ include the amount of total medication exposure, presence of dental diseases, operative dental procedures, increased age, medical co-morbidity. Dental practitioners play an important role in the prevention, detection and management of MRONJ. Strategies for managing MRONJ patients will be discussed in this lecture.

Learning objectives :

  • To learn the risk factors of MRONJ
  • To learn about the clinical manifestations and staging of MRONJ
  • To learn about the management of MRONJ
