What is the point of college? Typically college is designed to help you hone in on what you want to do for your career so when you graduate, you can find a job where you can be successful and enjoy the work you do. Many, however, speed through college without really taking care to focus on where they’re going to be when they graduate.
Internships
When you graduate from college, you want to show potential employers that you have the knowledge and skills needed to perform the job. Unfortunately, for many graduates information learned in school doesn’t mean much without real world experience to back it up. That’s where internships can play a major role.
Through an internship, you will be given the opportunity of using the skills and knowledge learned in school. Through that practice, the information learned will mean more to you. You will also gain a lot of skills that you just can’t learn in a classroom. Many college students pass up the opportunity of internships because many don’t pay anything or don’t pay a lot. What they don’t realize is the knowledge and experience gained from the internship is worth more than what they would get paid.
Finding Internships
If you’re willing to accept an internship without pay, you can more easily find the experience you’re looking for. The first thing you’ll want to do is talk to an internship coordinator at your school who will have contacts with companies looking for interns. Sometimes, you may be the only one interested which will guarantee you a spot. The important thing is to choose the right company to intern for.
