Sustainable Development Goals

In 2015, world leaders came together to adopt the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. For the first time, noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) were included as a priority for global sustainable development – a historic milestone for the NCD community.

Among the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), there is one health goal – SDG 3 – which seeks to “ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages”. To measure progress against SDG3, there are nine health-related-targets – including three NCD-related targets.

The significant health and economic burden of oral disease makes action on oral health mandatory for achieving the 2030 SDGs and its NCD-related targets. Oral health goes beyond SDG 3 – it’s related to several other SDGs and must be integrated into SDG monitoring frameworks and strategies. FDI is committed to leading the effort for the oral health community to mobilize stakeholders across all sectors for an integrated response to the SDGs.
