WOHD 2016 student awards presented in Poznan
FDI President Dr Patrick Hescot presented certificates to the winners of the four World Oral Health Day (WOHD) 2016 student awards at a brief ceremony during the Annual World Dental Congress in Poznań. The awards covered the winners’ travel to, from and registration at the congress.
Final adjudication of the awards had proved a complex task for the WOHD Task Team, with submissions from 19 national dental student associations competing for the four prize categories: most original activity, most educational activity, most spectacular photograph and best branded event.
The 2016 award winners were:
- Most original activity
Areej Tawik Elhorny, a 22-year-old student at the Tanta University dental school in Egypt and from the Dental Students' Scientific Association of Egypt (DSSA-Egypt). The award recognized the originality of activities that took place throughout Egypt and spanned a number of weeks around WOHD. One of the events received a visit from the Minister of Health and local officials.
- Most educational activity
Anna Nowak, 24 years old and in her final year of dental studies at the Medical University of Silesia, from the Polish Dental Students Association (PTS). Activities included learning about self-examinations, dental check-ups, oral hygiene instruction, dietary advice and, for older people, how to take care of dentures and implants.
- Most spectacular activity
Zerrin Kamaran, and graduate (2015) of Ishik University Faculty of Dentistry, Erbil, from the Kurdish Dental Health Organization in Iraq (KDHO-Iraq). The WOHD TT recognized that the pictures were, by their nature, spectacular, taken inside a conflict zone, and involving refugees and members the military.
- Best branded picture
Agata Orylska, 24 years old, studying dentistry at the Medical University of Łodz and from PTS. She has been on the board of the Łodz branch of PTS since 2014, where she is responsible for organizing and coordinating preventive actions. The award recognized best use of the WOHD brand.
The annual student prizes are administered by the International Association of Dental Students (IADS) and adjudicated by the World Oral Health Day Task Team: Edoardo Cavallè (Chair), Ihsane Ben Yahya, Duygu Ilhan, Kathy Roth, Awab Alvi, Ashok Dhoble and Takashi Inoue.
