Communicating the FDI message in the Middle-East

FDI President Dr Patrick Hescot

The beginning of 2016 is bringing into the focus the need for FDI to reinforce its presence and develop support in the Middle-East. FDI members there are in a minority and a new impetus is needed for dental societies and associations in the region to better understand the vision, role of and work of our federation. It was with this aim that I scheduled two events in the region, one in Riyadh, one in Dubai.

They have the advantage of bringing together participants both from the Middle-East itself, and from the entire Arabic-speaking region of North Africa from Egypt to the Maghreb, allowing me to consult with a wide group of FDI member and non-member national dental associations

IDC Saudi Arabia
From the 16th King Saud University and the 27th Saudi Dental Society (SDS) International Dental Conference Saudi Arabia, held in Riyadh from 5 to 7 January. It was a very well-attended event and gave me the opportunity to exchange views with members of the university dental faculty, as well as key decision makers in the region, including the State of Riyadh Governor, Prince Turki bin Abdullah.

Founded in 1957, King Saud University is the oldest seat of higher education in the kingdom and among the largest in the Middle-East region. The College of Dentistry was established by decree in 2006 and has four departments: Maxillofacial Surgery and Diagnostic Science (MDS); Preventive Dental Science (PDS); Restorative Dental Science Department (RDS); Prosthetic Dental Science (SDS) and Dental Auxiliary Department (DAD).

An update on FDI at AEEDC
I am also due to give a lecture at the 20th United Arab Emirates International Dental Conference & Arab Dental Exhibition, to be held in Dubai under the theme ‘Education and Innovation Transfer’.

I will be giving a three-part lecture on ‘New strategies, policies and challenges for the dental profession and oral health’. It will provide me with the opportunity of focusing on the socio-economic side of dentistry and FDI’s role of positioning oral health and the dental profession within wider national and international health policy trends.

It is very important for participants from the Middle-East region to grasp the evolving role of the dentist delivering oral health and quality of life to society and my aim is to illustrate this with illustrations of FDI’s recent initiatives within context of oral health and quality of life for ageing populations.

I am very much looking forward to AEEDC as an opportunity to re-establish an FDI presence following our highly-successful Annual World Dental Congress in Dubai in 2007. It was there, members will recall, that FDI launched its landmark Dental Ethics Manual in English, later issued in Arabic.

FDI CE Programme
The beginning of 2016 is also an opportunity to salute the work of our regional directors for the FDI Continuing Education (CE) Programme. And, as the main subject of this Letter is the Middle-East, I would like the personally thank Prof Mounir Doumit for the enthusiasm with which he undertook the re-launch of FDI’s work in the region to allow access to state-of-the-art dentistry to dental general practitioners and specialists.

The circumstances have not always been easy, but Prof Doumit, Professor of Public Health Dentistry and former Dean of the School  of Dentistry at the Lebanese University, has developed a rich and varied programme, delivered by renowned academic experts and clinicians covering fields from restorative and prosthetic dentistry, and implant dentistry to  paediatric dentistry, clinical and oral surgery and endodontics. One or more courses take place in 10 out of the 12 months in 2016.

World Oral Health Day 2016
I would also like to take this opportunity to remind National Dental Associations that World Oral Health Day is just 6 weeks away. You will be receiving notification that the Phase 2 toolkit, which describes the features of the new campaign and how and when to launch them, is now online. If you haven’t already obtained your copy, email wohd@fdiworldental.org.
