These proceedings are based on the FDI-NCD Alliance joint session that took place during the FDI World Dental Congress in Madrid, Spain on 30 August 2017. The session focused on leveraging the NCD movement to advance oral health, with a particular focus on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

This chairside guide advises oral health professionals on how to screen for the most common sites of oral cancer: tongue, insides of cheeks and floor of the mouth.

Oral cancer is a type of head and neck cancer and is any cancerous tissue growth located in the oral cavity. This guide focuses on oral cancer, which dentists can detect by observing the oral mucosa, as it is both superficial and accessible.

FDI conducted a survey among its 140 regular members on oral conditions in the elderly and found that, from the 62 National Dental Associations (NDAs) who took part, only 39% collect data.
