FDI President

As I write this last message with my term as FDI President winding down, I want to thank you, our members, for allowing me the opportunity to serve. It has been an exciting, memorable and rewarding two years for me and FDI.

Sojourn in Hanoi

My last trip as FDI President was to Hanoi, Vietnam for the 12th Vietnam International Dental Exhibition and Congress (VIDEC) organized by the Vietnam Odonto-Stomatology Association (VOSA). I was unable to attend their congress last year as it was too close to the FDI World Dental Congress in Buenos Aires, so I was thrilled to be able to join them this year.

The opening ceremony of the congress was filled with cultural entertainment and included speeches from VOSA President Trinh Dinh Hai and the Acting President of Vietnam Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh. It was an honour to meet with Acting President Ngoc Thinh, who presented me as well as other speakers with a medal for our contributions to oral health. It was encouraging to see many other important dignitaries attending the congress, such as Minister of Health Prof. Nguyen Thi Kim Tien, Minister of Home Affairs Dr Tran Auh Tuan and Chair of the Vietnam Medical Association Prof. Nguyen Thi Xuyen. Engaging government leaders on the importance of oral health is crucial for securing their commitment to prioritize oral health. The congress concluded with a Gala Dinner where we celebrated a highly successful event and I presented VOSA President Hai with a plaque for VOSA’s members and his dedication to optimal oral health.

Ready for the congress

I look forward to seeing you all at the ADA FDI World Dental Congress in San Francisco next week. We have an impressive line-up of sessions and speakers at the congress. Sessions are filling up quickly, so please hurry and register for the sessions that you wish to attend. My top picks for the congress include the FDI-NCD Alliance-World Health Organization session, Strengthening interprofessional collaboration: Integrated models of care for oral health and NCDs, and the FDI World Oral Health Forum on Universal Health Coverage.

The congress will be a bitter-sweet moment for me as it will formally conclude my presidency. I feel deeply honoured to have served as President of such a wonderful organization with dedicated members working steadfastly to improve oral health for individuals, communities and populations. We have so much more to do, but I am confident that we are making sound headway. There are so many outstanding activities and events in store for 2020 and beyond, and I wish our incoming President Dr Gerhard Seeberger all the best as he continues to chart FDI’s path.
