I was privileged to attend two of the largest dental congresses in the world organized by FDI members that foster a spirit of innovation, collaboration and knowledge sharing.

Spotlight on dental amalgam at CIOSP

With heavy snow across the midwestern United States, it was a challenge to arrive in São Paulo, Brazil for the 37th São Paulo International Dental Congress (Congresso Internacional de Odontologia de São Paulo - CIOSP). After many delays, I was very pleased to finally arrive in sunny São Paulo in time for CISOP where 105,731 dentists attended. The meeting was organized by the Paulista Association of Dental Surgeons (Associação Paulista de Cirurgiões Dentistas – APCD), the São Paulo regional branch of the Brazilian Association of Dental Surgeons (Associação Brasileira de Cirurgiões-Dentistas – ABCD).

During the congress, I delivered a presentation on The Global Impact of the Minamata Convention on Mercury for Dentistry. To date, 102 out of 128 signatory countries have ratified the Minamata Convention. The Convention proposes nine measures to phase down the use of dental amalgam, of which ratifying countries must implement two or more measures. Brazil became the 75th country to ratify the Convention in 2017 and is working to phase down the use of dental amalgam and improve the disposal of dental amalgam waste.

FDI fully supports the phase down of dental amalgam, but countries and dentists must be given access to safe, effective and affordable alternatives. This will not become a reality in many countries without sustainable funding and increased prevention and research into alternative restorative materials. Dental amalgam will be intensely discussed at the third meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Minamata Convention (COP3) in November 2019 and FDI will keep its members up-to-date with all developments. To learn more about the Convention, guidance, obligations and opportunities for the dental sector, please consult FDI’s Guidelines for Successful Implementation on Dental Amalgam Phase Down and the 2018 FDI Policy Statement on Dental Amalgam Phase Down.

Dr Kell at CIOSP 2019

At CIOSP, I attended several other events, including the FDI Latin American Regional Organization (LARO) Meeting with its members. LARO President Dr Lupe Salazar Zurita led discussions on upcoming projects and meetings. It was a genuine pleasure to see strong engagement and enthusiasm from the region.

Innovation in focus at AEEDC

After a busy schedule at CIOSP, I took an overnight flight to Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) for the 23rd UAE International Dental Conference and Arab Dental Exhibition – AEEDC Dubai. At the conference, I participated in a panel discussion entitled AEEDC Dubai Stars, which explored the future of IT, artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced solutions in the dental industry. The panel focused on the latest technologies, such as 3D imaging, implants done by AI and CAD/CAM developments. I also stressed that preventive advances in prevention, vaccines, salivary diagnostics and DNA research are also important. While in Dubai, it was also great to participate in the 16th Global Scientific Dental Alliance Meeting and the 2nd International Dental Congress of the Arab Dental Federation.

Countdown to World Oral Health Day

In just a few short weeks, World Oral Health Day (WOHD) will be celebrated across the globe on 20 March. The official theme of the 2019 WOHD campaign is ‘Say Ahh: Act on Mouth Health’. With this campaign, FDI calls on individuals to take tangible action to protect their oral health. How will you get involved in this important event? The WOHD website has a variety of resources, toolkits, key messages and posters to help you – members of the public, oral health professionals, NDAs and policymakers – mark WOHD. By uniting our efforts, we can Act on Mouth Health! I look forward to celebrating WOHD next month in Cairo, Egypt at a special event organized by Unilever.

Remembering Dr Roberto Vianna

Roberto Vianna portraitI am saddened to hear of the death of Dr Roberto Vianna FDI Past President (2009-2011), who passed away last week. A Brazilian native, Roberto was extremely active in promoting oral health locally, regionally and globally. He will be remembered as a strong oral health advocate. On behalf of FDI, I send our sincerest condolences to Roberto’s family and friends.
