World Oral Health Day

World Oral Health Day (WOHD) is a far-reaching global oral health campaign. It is a platform for the public, oral health community, and policymakers to help reduce the overall oral disease burden.

WOHD is celebrated on 20 March every year; the day was first declared by FDI in 2007 and first officially celebrated in 2013. It is the culmination of a year-long campaign dedicated to raising global awareness on the prevention and control of oral diseases. It is an international day to promote good oral health for everyone and empower individuals to maintain a healthy mouth at all ages.

Why celebrate World Oral Health Day?

Most people will suffer from an oral condition in their lifetimes. Many of these conditions can be avoided with increased awareness, support, and funding for prevention, detection and treatment programmes, which is what World Oral Health Day is all about.

FDI encourages all member National Dental Associations, governments, non-governmental organizations, media and other entities to participate in WOHD to develop community, national, regional, and global activities to improve oral health.

Say Ahh: Think Mouth, Think Health

WOHD18: Say Ahh

The Say Ahh theme is a three-year campaign launched in 2018, starting with Think Mouth, Think Health as the first sub-theme. It empowers you to keep a healthy mouth and helps you maintain your general health and well-being. A healthy mouth and a healthy body go hand in hand. Maintaining a healthy mouth is crucial to keeping it functioning correctly and for maintaining overall health and quality of life.

The theme focuses on four main messages:

  1. Oral health is much more than a nice smile

  2. Oral health and general health have a two-way relationship

  3. The mouth cannot be isolated from the rest of the body

  4. Most oral diseases share common risk factors with other diseases

Live Mouth Smart

The 2017 theme, ‘Live MOUTH SMART’, empowers people to take control of their oral health – throughout life – so they can enjoy a healthy, functional mouth from childhood into old age.

Oral health means the health of the mouth. A healthy mouth allows you to speak, smile, smell, taste, touch, chew, swallow and convey a range of emotions with confidence and without pain, discomfort and disease. No matter what your age – 5, 25, 65 or 85 years – oral health is vital to your general health and well-being.

Of the many resources developed for the campaign available on the World Oral Health Day website, you can find the video, an infographic from data collected in a survey, a brochure for the general public with oral health tips, among others.
