What is the FDI-Unilever Partnership?

Known as Live.Learn.Laugh., this unique global partnership between FDI World Dental Federation and Unilever Oral Care aims to measurably improve oral health on a global scale through encouraging twice daily brushing with a fluoride toothpaste.

Founded in 2004, the first phase of the partnership reached at least one million people through 40 diverse oral health improvement projects in 37 countries. In 2010, the partners entered a second phase of activity and decided to focus on one consistent goal, for even greater impact.

Dental caries are the most common chronic disease on the planet, causing pain and suffering on a global scale. Yet it is largely preventable. Abundant scientific evidence demonstrates that twice daily brushing with fluoride toothpaste is effective in preventing caries, however, it is estimated that only 20% of the world’s population has access to fluoride. Promotion of twice daily brushing with fluoride toothpaste is strongly recommended by the FDI World Dental Federation (policy statement issued in 2008) and the behaviour is encouraged through Unilever’s Brush Day & Night Campaign. Collaboration towards this single shared goal sits at the very heart of the partnership.

The partners work together to achieve their aim through:

  • oral health improvement programmes run in partnership between National Dental Associations and Unilever Oral Care brands around the world
  • use of the the FDI logo 
  • use of a supporting statement on Unilever Oral Care toothpaste, toothbrush and mouthwash packs

In Phase II, there are currently 29 local oral health projects improving the health and wellbeing of people around the world by encouraging twice-daily brushing with a fluoride toothpaste.

Through the FDI-Unilever partnership and the oral health improvement programmes the partnership delivers, people are being freed from their oral health concerns, to live and enjoy life to the full.

As a result of the supportive statements that appear with the FDI World Dental Federation logo on Unilever Oral Care products (“The FDI recognizes that twice daily brushing with a fluoride toothpaste is beneficial for oral health.”); through the oral care educational programmes; and the informative literature produced through the partnership; people have the opportunity to learn and improve their own oral health.

The ultimate goal of Live.Learn.Laugh.is to improve oral health globally, as both FDI World Dental Federation and Unilever Oral Care believe it is intrinsically linked to overall wellbeing. When people are healthy, they are free to enjoy life and enjoyment goes beyond simply smiling; people can truly embrace laughter.
