The 100th FDI Annual World Dental Congress took place from 29 August–1 September 2012 in Hong Kong. Celebrating one Century, the Congress was a success, receiving 10,547 participants from 115 countries. This edition was co-organized with the Hong Kong Dental Association.
The Scientific Programme addressed the major themes and concerns of dental practitioners at the time, presented by some of the world's leading clinicians and experts in the field. FDI launched its advocacy programme, Vision 2020, after nearly 12 months of sustained effort and debate by a specially-created Task Team. It was well-received by FDI General Assembly participants — the general consensus was that it constitutes a good starting point for further reflection.
One new Council member and twelve Committee members were elected (or reelected) during the late August meeting of the FDI General Assembly. The General Assembly also approved a number of resolutions likely to have a direct impact on the future of FDI.
The 100th FDI WDC was also the the debut for the first World Oral health Forum. This first edition of the Forum served to review the political framework on environment and health to which the dental profession will have to adapt. It also raised constructive critiques on the implementation by FDI and all stakeholders of the Vision 2020 document.
